Transforming the Future of Construction: Volvo's Iron Women Initiative
In a bold move to tackle the severe shortage of skilled labor in the construction industry, Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has launched the Iron Women initiative—a global effort designed to empower women and expand workforce capabilities. This initiative is not merely a symbolic effort; it represents a substantial investment in developing a sustainable and diverse workforce necessary to drive technological advancement in the construction sector.
Why the Skills Gap Matters
The construction industry faces a pressing skills gap that could hinder its growth and innovation. As the demand for advanced machines and new technologies rises, so does the need for trained professionals who can operate and maintain this equipment. Melker Jernberg, President of Volvo CE, emphasizes that without the right skills, even the most innovative machinery cannot be effectively deployed. Volvo CE aims to build lasting workforce solutions that enhance productivity and safety while addressing the industry's critical labor needs.
A Proven Model with Global Reach
Originally introduced in 2016 by Volvo Trucks, the Iron Women program has successfully trained over 700 women across ten countries for professional driving roles. In 2024, Volvo CE adapted the program for construction, launching its first site in Ukraine. This initiative aims to train women as certified heavy equipment operators, with plans to reskill 1,000 women as part of the country’s reconstruction efforts.
Expansion into Key Markets
In 2025, the Iron Women program expanded to India, where the need for skilled workers is critical. Partnering with key stakeholders, including local engineering firms and government training institutes, the program offers targeted certification tracks that have already achieved full placement for its first graduating class. Participants, like Laxmi Naik, have shared transformative experiences of confidence, skills, and potential, paving the way for their futures in an industry that has largely overlooked women.
Looking Ahead: Scaling the Initiative
With the program proven effective in Ukraine and India, Volvo CE is now focused on scaling Iron Women to additional territories, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland, throughout 2026. The goal is not only to fill vacant positions but also to create a more inclusive workforce that ultimately benefits the entire construction industry. As Jernberg stated, "The next step is scaling it—expanding Iron Women to build workforce capacity where it's needed most, at a pace that matches industry transformation."
